With a crisply articulate approach to mainstream modern jazz that demonstrates a commitment to the virtues of clarity and swing, Mark Eisenman’s style suggests such pianistic models as Wynton Kelly and Tommy Flanagan. This has long been apparent in his trio with bassist Steve Wallace and drummer John Sumner; he expands that group here to include saxophonist Mike Murley and trumpeter John MacLeod. July 3 and 4. Alto saxophonist Richard Underhill’s fascination with locale has been evident since the Shuffle Demons recorded “Spadina Bus,” and it’s especially prevalent in his colourful CD Kensington Suite (2007), a Juno-nominated invocation of his neighbourhood. His quintet appears here with tenor saxophonist Bob Brough and pianist Luis Guerra. July 18. The quartet God’s Gift to Yoda gets its character from its two young guitarists, Harley Card and Don Scott, who happily mix pop and jazz sensibilities in coolly adventurous soundscapes. Bassist Michael Herring and drummer Nico Dann provide rhythmic drive and detail. — Stuart Broomer
