The Rex

The Queen West stalwart is hosting a festival of performances by groups currently featured on New York’s Nineteen-Eight Records, an artist-run label that emphasizes jazz with an electric touch. The performers are showcased in a series of double-bills, but there’s a degree of homogeneity, with pianist Henry Hey and guitarist Pete McCann popping up in more than one group. The quartet Rudder, with saxophonist Chris Cheek and Hey, appears with pianist Anthony Molinaro’s quartet. Feb. 2 and 3. Pete McCann is a brilliant guitarist equally capable of pyrotechnics and subtle lyricism. His quartet plays with other bands on Feb. 4 and 5; bassist and former Metalwood member Chris Tarry leads his quartet in a show that also includes saxophonist Will Vinson’s quartet, Feb. 6 and 7.—Stuart Broomer
