Composer and trombonist Darren Sigesmund may have released last year’s most compelling mainstream Canadian jazz album. The brilliant Strands II makes great use of Eliana Cuevas’s (wordless) voice, which becomes an integral part of the powerful ensemble; meanwhile, Sigesmund’s reflective themes give rise to consistently inspired solos. At the end of its national tour, the band includes Cuevas, saxophonist Quinsin Nachoff, guitarist Reg Schwager, bassist Jim Vivian and drummer Ethan Ardelli, April 2. The Israeli-born New York guitarist Oz Noy is a magician with effects pedals as well as fingers, creating a bubbling maze of electronics and traditional lines. But his strongest endorsement may be in the quality of his supporting band: guitarist Wayne Krantz, as well as bassist Will Lee and drummer Anton Fig, who are members of Paul Shaffer’s World’s Most Dangerous Band on Late Night With David Letterman, April 21 to 24.—Stuart Broomer
