THE REX

The Queen Street club continues its expanded programming during the Toronto Jazz Festival, presenting two sets each by three bands a night. Singer SHANNON BUTCHER has just released Words We Both Could Say, successfully applying an acoustic jazz sensibility to pop, rock and country material. July 1. THE CHRIS TARRY GROUP delivers contemporary fusion with energy and artfulness, highlighted by the work of guitarist Pete McCann. The band’s most recent CD, Almost Certainly Dreaming (2007), won the Juno for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, July 2 and 3. With a discography that includes recordings with Brad Mehldau and Kenny Barron, JOEL FRAHM combines a warm sound with an exuberant swing that links him strongly to some great tenor saxophonists of the past, such as Zoot Sims and Hank Mobley. He appears here with the ERNESTO CERVINI QUARTET, July 3, and as a special guest with singer MELISSA STYLIANOU’s quintet, July 5. As part of its regular programming, The Rex has an exceptional young guitarist dropping by: Portuguese-born Boston resident FRANCISCO PAIS, who favours complex Latin beats and understated electronics, performs with his quintet on July 13. MARK EISENMAN is a consummate mainstream pianist, consistently matching propulsion with harmonic invention. Heard in his quintet, Eisenman also displays his talents as an accompanist. He’s joined here by tenor saxophonist Pat LaBarbera and trumpeter John MacLeod, as well as his regular trio compatriots, bassist Steve Wallace and drummer John Sumner, July 23 and 24. —Stuart Broomer
