The fusion of jazz and Cuban music exploded around 1948, the year Paquito D’Rivera was born. Though the style was spearheaded by his mentor Dizzy Gillespie, few musicians have brought greater spirit or fluency to the creative merger than D’Rivera. The saxophonist and clarinetist consistently manages to generate heat and light, from his role as co-founder of Irakere in the 1970s to his more recent work. His CD Funk Tango won the 2007 Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album, and it’s an excellent introduction to the dance rhythms and bop invention that drive his regular quintet.—Stuart Broomer
