When the 1997 CD Buena Vista Social Club alerted the world to the richness of Cuban music, Omara Portuondo was among the band’s most significant members, a singer of exalted emotional power who infuses traditional Cuban songs with her own depth of experience. Part of a larger tradition that includes Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf and Cesaria Evora, Portuondo sings ballads in a grainy, smoky voice, forgoing the dance music with which her country is usually associated. — Stuart Broomer
