David Braid has established himself as a principal player in Toronto’s mainstream jazz scene, whether heading up his own sextet, co-leading groups with Mike Murley or playing piano as a sideman in a host of bands. He’s also formed two memorable and distinct duos that work to expand his musical horizons. Brubeck Braid pairs him with cellist Matt Brubeck in a combination that borders on the classical. Nimmons ’n’ Braid is the pianist’s other partnership, a duo with the great clarinetist Phil Nimmons, who at 85 is still finding new directions. Together the two focus on highly empathetic free-improvisation.—Stuart Broomer
