Toronto’s reigning jazz diva, Molly Johnson is one of those singers who inevitably gets compared to Billie Holiday. While it’s true that Johnson’s voice has some of the lived-in grit and fragile optimism that distinguished Holiday’s, she also has her own sound (from warm lows to airy highs) and applies it with rare control and depth of feeling.—Stuart Broomer
