Whether you call her sound nu-jazz or smooth jazz, Daniela Nardi—who is releasing her new album, The Rose Tattoo—is a fine singer-songwriter. The Torontonian seamlessly integrates R&B and Latin beats, as well as improvised accompaniments with superior pop songs, at times suggesting Annie Lennox in her deft handling of emotional themes. Oct. 14. Along with the venerable Toots Thielemans, Hendrik Meurkens is one of just two musicians who has somehow managed to negotiate the complexities of modern jazz on a harmonica, flying through complex chord changes with aplomb. The New York–based Meurkens is also a fine vibraphonist, and he employs both of these instruments in his celebratory approach to the rhythms and melodies of Brazil. He’s joined here by flutist Jeremy Price and trumpeter Nick “Brownman” Ali. Oct. 17.—Stuart Broomer
