Lori Cullen

A busy figure in Toronto’s folk, jazz and avant-pop scenes, this beguiling Toronto singer-guitarist has something special planned for her Mother’s Day concert at Harbourfront Centre. Performing songs from her forthcoming disc, as well as Calling for Rain (2006)—a recent Juno nominee for best vocal jazz album—Lori Cullen appears with a dozen guest musicians, including guitarist Kurt Swinghammer and the True North Brass quintet. Contributing his services as arranger is Chris Dedrick, best known for his work with the Free Design, the ’60s soft-pop group that was recently rediscovered by a new generation of listeners. Hopefully he’ll bring just as much magic to these unique performances of Cullen’s ethereal and engaging songs. —Jason Anderson
