Guitarist Rosenwinkel has worked extensively with such jazz traditionalists as Brad Mehldau, as well as hip hop’s Q-Tip, from A Tribe Called Quest. Whatever the setting, Rosenwinkel is constantly pursuing fresh rhythmic and harmonic possibilities. The just-released Reflections emphasizes compositions by Thelonious Monk and Wayne Shorter in which his guitar approaches the harmonic richness of a piano, but with a singing, barely electrified sound that marks his place in the jazz guitar tradition as well as the vanguard.—Stuart Broomer
