Soprano saxophonist Jim Galloway is a talented advocate of Duke Ellington, and his Wee Big Band has always been a proficient instrument for demonstrating his affection. That fondness is explicit in this holiday-themed performance as Galloway and company tackle a jazz version of The Nutcracker Suite. Orchestrated by Ellington and his writing partner Billy Strayhorn in 1960, it’s a translation of Tchaikovsky’s seasonal masterpiece, with original segments transformed into “Sugar Rum Cherry” and “Dance of the Floreadores.”—Stuart Broomer
