Jazz Vespers

The presence of jazz in religious services can be traced back to the New Orleans marching bands that accompanied funerals a century ago, but there’s a more specific history that begins in 1959, with saxophonist Ed Summerlin’s integration of jazz into church services. It’s become a regular occurrence at Christ Church Deer Park, with a Sunday evening service that combines jazz with readings, prayers and a congregational hymn. Coordinated by drummer Brian Barlow, the series is now in its 12th season and features some of the city’s most notable musicians. At the quieter end of the spectrum, flute player Bill McBirnie and pianist Bernie Senensky appear Nov. 8, and pianist Ron Davis and bassist Mike Downes on Nov. 15. If you’re seeking some joyful noise unto the Lord, try a Tribute to Art Blakey, where the late drummer is celebrated by a quintet that includes Brian Barlow, trumpeter Steve McDade and tenor saxophonist Perry White, Nov. 29.—Stuart Broomer
