More than just a fine big band, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is the centrepiece of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis’s take on jazz history, emphasizing pre-1960 repertoire. To this end, the orchestra can replicate the taut swing of Count Basie, the lush textures of Duke Ellington and the subtle voicings of Gil Evans. Driven along by the drumming of Ali Jackson, it draws on such gifted soloists as trumpeter Ryan Kisor and saxophonist Ted Nash.—Stuart Broomer
