She may be best known for the 1974 hit “Midnight at the Oasis,” but Maria Muldaur is a master of many idioms, bringing a special élan to elemental jazz and blues, as well as her covers of songs by Bessie Smith, Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan. (2006), shows a lyricist’s taste in picking strong material—from country and folk greats Hank Williams and Jimmy Webb, say—and a consummate performer’s ability to bridge styles, adding a jazz lilt and Broadway inflection to homespun material.
