Maria Farinha is a consummate interpreter of Brazilian jazz and bossa nova, whether singing her own songs or mining the genre’s repertoire. Aug. 16. Nigerian-born saxophonist and singer Femi Abosede leads a 22-member Afrobeat band. Aug. 16. In a tribute to her neighbourhood, Elizabeth Shepherd recently released Parkdale, a mix of strong songwriting, moody balladry and assertive instrumental skills, all hinging on her highly effective singing and her glittering piano sound. Shepherd’s band with trumpeter William Sperandei, bassist Scott Kemp, drummer Colin Kingsmore and percussionist Roman Tome can range from dynamic Latin jazz to a warm carpet of sound for her lyrical musings (Aug. 17).
