Home Smith Bar: November

Tenor saxophonist Bob Brough has been a consistent presence on the Canadian jazz scene since the 1970s, and a distinguished element in groups ranging from Time Warp to Richard Underhill’s recent bands. All of Brough’s work is marked by emotional immediacy and a forceful lyricism. He’s accompanied here by pianist Dave Restivo, Nov. 15. Bill McBirnie can make jazz flute seem effortless, combining a coolly controlled sound with fleet inventiveness, whether he’s playing a classic ballad from the Great American Songbook or a modern jazz standard by Thelonious Monk or Sonny Rollins. He’s matched here with two musicians of comparable distinction, guitarist Roy Patterson and bassist Neil Swainson, Nov. 22.Also appearing: Martin Aucoin Trio, Nov. 1; Sultans of String Duo, Nov. 7; Heather Bambrick Trio, Nov. 8; and Harris Mark Duo, Nov. 21.—Stuart Broomer
