With such hits as “In the Mood,” “Moonlight Serenade” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” Miller’s group may well have been among the most popular of the swing bands, concentrating on a lushly romantic sound and distinctive reed voicings rather than spirited solos and sheer rhythmic drive. After Miller’s plane disappeared over the English Channel during World War II, the band continued under its drummer, Ray McKinley. The current leader, trombonist Larry O’Brien, worked with McKinley in the early ’60s. — Stuart Broomer
