Whether she’s working through some vintage standard or one of her own songs, Shepherd is an engaging musical presence, her distinctive voice and quirky lyrics bouncing over the bubbling electric ring of her Fender Rhodes piano and her band’s weaving percussion and bass. Her 2008 disc, Parkdale, has extended her reach from Toronto to audiences as far afield as Japan.—Stuart Broomer
