The great bebop trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was an early advocate of cultural crossover and musical synthesis, whether it involved incorporating Afro-Cuban chanting and drumming into his music or leading a United Nations Orchestra of African-American and Latin American musicians. Panamanian pianist Danilo Perez, most celebrated for his work with Wayne Shorter, has elaborated on the concept, assembling a brilliant ensemble with divergent backgrounds to perform Gillespie’s works. Among his notable sidemen are Iraqi trumpeter Amir El-Saffar, Puerto Rican tenor saxophonist David Sánchez and Indian alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa.—Stuart Broomer
