Bobby McFerrin

Bobby McFerrin is a gifted singer with a four-octave range and a mastery of pitch and harmony that set him apart early on in the realms of modern jazz and vocalese (vocal adaptations of classic instrumental improvisations). As talented as he is, McFerrin is equally distinguished by his enthusiasm and sense of adventure. It’s a combination that has led to orchestra conducting, the pop hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” and his recent (wordless) improvised opera about the Tower of Babel, called Bobble, which he performed in Russia with 20 other singers. Like his collaborator Yo-Yo Ma, McFerrin has an ability to shift and merge genres while keeping audiences entertained.—Stuart Broomer
