True to its original community spirit, this large-scale event showcases celebratory music along the commercial strip of Queen Street East and in its weekend park performances, supplemented with workshops and craft booths. While it’s a jazz festival in name, other genres—from rockabilly to electric blues to salsa—are often more apparent. Opening night highlights the talented young jazz singer Sophie Berkal-Sarbit, as well as Jay Douglas and the All-Stars featuring Rusty, a fine local band with Jamaican roots and a touch of Cajun and country, July 16. That eclecticism is matched on Saturday by Nomadic Massive, a sprawling Haitian hip-hop group from Montreal, July 17. Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, featuring the brilliant trombone and trumpet work of Troy Andrews, is likely to be the festival high point. At 24, Andrews has been playing the trombone in public for nearly two decades and has worked with the likes of Lenny Kravitz, U2 and Wynton Marsalis, July 17. Local performers with strong Latin American roots make up Sunday’s program, such as the Argentine cabaret of Alejandra Ribera and the Cuban-rooted band Son Aché, July 18. Woodbine Park, at Northern Dancer Blvd. and Lake Shore Blvd. E. Queen Street East is closed to traffic between Woodbine and Beech Avenues for three evenings in honour of Streetfest, a showcase for bands specializing in genres ranging from Dixieland to swing, samba and dance-funk, July 22 to 24. Saturday begins with the Griffith Hiltz Trio and ends with the smooth jazz of Warren Hill, July 24. The Sultans of String show up on the final day, as does the Rockit 88 Band, July 25.
