The Bad Plus

Much like Medeski Martin and Wood, and Sweden’s EST, the Bad Plus have managed to fuse jazz and pop sensibilities, combining, in their case, recent pop and rock melodies and big-beat rhythms with an improvisatory group dialogue. Pianist Ethan Iverson, bassist Reid Anderson and drummer David King have gone as far afield in their repertoire as Ozzy Osbourne. Their latest album, For All I Care (2009), includes tributes to Nirvana, Pink Floyd and the Bee Gees.—Stuart Broomer
