Art of Jazz's directors (Jane Bunnett, Larry Cramer and company) are keeping to the original formula for the fest’s second year, focusing on art over accessibility while still honouring two musicians—one Canadian, one international—who are accompanied here by several close associates. This year’s Canadian is Kenny Wheeler, the trumpeter and composer who departed for London, England, in 1952. While Wheeler may not be our most famous jazz export, he’s certainly among the most creative and influential: the gathering of collaborators clearly indicates the significance of his subtle, cerebral work, characterized by innovative interval leaps and Hindemith-like harmonic richness. He’s joined by alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson and bassist Dave Holland. June 1. $39.50. Jon Hendricks, the international honouree, is among the founders of vocalese (the art of setting lyrics to recorded jazz solos), having brought the style to the fore in the 1950s with the brilliant group Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, and its vocal simulations of the Basie band, among others. June 3. $39.50. Other ticketed events include a night of dance and drums hosted by Veronica Tennant, May 31 ($39); and an Afro-Cuban Jazz and Dance Party, June 2 ($29.50). The full schedule of events includes workshops, panels, jam sessions and free concerts. —Stuart Broomer
