Now in its third season, the Art of Jazz continues to expand its educational outreach programs, all while maintaining its singular devotion to music of the highest order. Each instalment has been structured around the presentation of Lifetime Achievement Awards, and this year there are two international honorees, both Brazilian. Hermeto Pascoal first drew global rave reviews when he provided compositions for and played on Miles Davis’s Live-Evil project. The Art of Jazz Orchestra is performing Pascoal’s music here, a heady combination of modern jazz, and folk instruments and rhythms from Brazil. Jovino Santo Neto conducts. June 7. The second honoree is multi-instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti, who, over the past 35 years, has fashioned strikingly personal music that incorporates classical influences, disparate Brazilian folk sources and improvisation. He’s joined by a string quartet. June 8. This year’s Canadian recipient isn’t a musician, but few performers have devoted more energy to jazz than John Norris, whose efforts include founding Coda, the Canadian jazz magazine that’s now in its 50th year, and Sackville Records, the 40-year-old jazz label. Among those participating in the awards show is Wray Downes, a bop pianist of the first rank. He’s joined by master clarinetist and composer Phil Nimmons, some of whose finest work has appeared on the Sackville label. The Joe Temperley/Dan Block Quintet appears, along with pianist Randy Weston, composer of jazz standards “Hi-Fly” and “Little Niles.” All unite with Jim Galloway’s Wee Big Band to conclude the evening. June 5. A duet series presents some of the finest improvisers, including Randy Weston with tenor saxophonist Billy Harper, June 6; and singer Sheila Jordan with pianist Steve Kuhn, June 7. — Stuart Broomer
