With U2-calibre pyrotechnics and uniforms like those of a basketball-themed barbershop quartet, the Globetrotters fall somewhere between a sports team and a travelling circus. They’re more of a novelty act than anything—Whoopi Goldberg, Henry Kissinger and the late Pope John Paul are honourary members—but the team still dazzles with superhuman slam-dunks, layups and ball spins that blur the line between athletics and theatrics.
