Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival

Known for supporting Canadian artists, this pan-Asian fest shows new shorts by Torontonians Dean Vargas and Lena Lee (Castle in the Sky) and Jennifer Liao (What You Eat), and spotlights the 30-year career of GG- winning video artist Paul Wong, best known for Confused: Sexual Views and Ordinary Shadows, Chinese Shade. In addition to fiction features from Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the Philippines, there are exhibitions at various galleries, a five-director exploration of karaoke at the Rivoli by performance group Empty Orchestra, a time-lapse-performance-cum-large-scale-animation by Japanese artist Takashi Ishida at Trinity Square Video, and a series of strong documentaries, including one about a young Cambodian land mine victim (Aki Ra’s Boys) and another about the lives of Asian-American vaudeville performers in the 1940s and ’50s (Christine Choy’s Long Story Short). —Brent Ledger
