Toronto International Film Festival

A star-sprinkled tribute to celebrity and obscurity alike (Kornél Mundruczó, anyone?), the 33rd annual festival opens its 300-film-strong extravaganza with, as usual, one of our own. Paul Gross stars in the world premiere of Passchendaele, a World War I epic that he just happens to have also written, produced and directed. Other offerings by local filmmakers include Atom Egoyan’s Adoration, which won the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Cannes in May, and Toronto Stories, an anthology featuring four flicks set in our city (one of them by Definitely Not the Opera host Sook-Yin Lee, another by Love, Sex & Eating the Bones director Sudz Sutherland). Splashy gala presentations include The Duchess, a period piece starring Keira Knightley in the titular role, and The Secret Life of Bees, based on the best-selling Sue Monk Kidd novel.—Brent Ledger
