Modern-day fashionistas were far behind the curve on this one; high heels have been around since the Renaissance, when members of the aristocracy wore outrageous platforms known as chopines. The Bata showcases these and other rarities from the 15th and 16th centuries in a show examining their origin and cultural significance.—Brent Ledger
