Folks bearing lights, lanterns and torches walk the waterfront on Saturday night as part of Luminato’s three-day take on international carnival traditions. New Orleans’s famed Dirty Dozen Brass Band performs Friday at an event that ropes together customs from Brazil, Europe, Asia, Latin America and, of course, Louisiana. There’s a lot of kids’ programming, a performance by soca king Machel Montano, and a masquerade ball featuring Brazilian drumming, Venetian-style commedia dell’arte, Italian baroque music and courtly dance instruction. —Brent Ledger
