Hosted by Mi Young Kim Dance Company, this biannual festival is always built around a specific theme, with this year’s being ritual dances. The fest’s centrepiece is a performance by Buddhist monks from Seoul’s Bongwon Temple that blends dance, drumming and chanting in a treasured traditional Korean ritual called Young San Jae. Choreographers Denise Fujiwara, Peter Chin and Sashar Zarif all present works based on ceremony and spirituality, while Mi Young Kim’s new piece, Shim Chung, has roots in a shamanistic rite that tells the story of a daughter’s devotion to her beloved father.—Paula Citron
