This season’s mixed program features three very different abstract ballets. New to the repertoire, Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room (1986) is an eclectic, athletic fusion of styles paired with a Philip Glass score; Christopher Wheeldon’s Polyphonia (2001) captures the challenges of György Ligeti’s dissonant piano music through elegantly complex movement; and George Balanchine’s Symphony in C (1947) is a glorious neo-classical romp within strict geometric forms set to Georges Bizet’s composition. Nov. 5 to 9. Master choreographer John Neumeier scored a big hit with his 2002 adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s famous play about tortured relationships and self-delusion, The Seagull. He has cleverly changed the theatrical occupations of the protagonists to the world of dance, and used music by the great Russian composers. Nov. 14 to 23.—Paula Citron
