National Ballet of Canada

The new repertoire work in the National Ballet’s winter mixed program is A Suite of Dances by Jerome Robbins, created in 1994 for Mikhail Baryshnikov and built around Bach’s music. Marie Chouinard takes on her own classical giant with 24 Preludes by Chopin, an outrageously droll reaction to the Polish composer’s romanticism, while James Kudelka focuses on a man’s journey from youth to old age in his hailed The Four Seasons. March 3 to 7. Kudelka’s radical rethinking of Swan Lake uses his signature dense footwork to explore themes of male oppression, resulting in a dark fairy tale that challenges both audiences and the dancers. Purists hate this version because it lacks classical clarity, but liberal balletomanes gleefully argue over Kudelka’s intended symbolism. March 11 to 21.—Paula Citron
