Thanks to the success of such films as Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days—a bleak yet elegant portrait of abortion, totalitarian style—Romanian film is now the hottest thing in world cinema. Cinematheque explores its further reaches with showings of Mungiu’s first feature, Occident (April 27); one of his personal faves, Lucian Pintilie’s The Oak (April 26); and 2005 art-house hit The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (April 20.) Series continues to May 2. Also screening: Matt Gallagher’s doc about a family burger biz, The Rise and Fall of the Grumpy Burger (May 8 and 9); as well as rare and unusual flicks by Dietrich director Josef von Sternberg, including the 1928 silent film The Docks of New York (May 3), and his adaptation of An American Tragedy, the Theodore Dreiser novel that would later become A Place in the Sun (May 7).—Brent Ledger
