Since the dance’s creation in 1960, almost every one of the company’s Toronto shows has featured Alvin Ailey’s Revelations, raising the question: when is AAADT going to grow past this piece? Yes, it’s Ailey’s signature work about the black American experience, but thank goodness for the thrilling inclusion of Maurice Béjart’s The Firebird (1970), performed here by dancers clad in coveralls, enacting a stirring if veiled homage to the communist ideal. The impressive choreographic lineup also includes Robert Battle, Judith Jamison, Billy Wilson and up-and-comer Camille A. Brown.—Paula Citron
