This marks the first fully staged Canadian presentation of Sergei Prokofiev’s epic setting of Tolstoy’s mammoth novel, which follows the Russian people and their hard-won victory over Napoleon’s military force. Incorporating stirring choruses and a massive ensemble cast (more than 60 named roles), this co-production with the English National Opera features international singers led by Canadian lyric baritone Russell Braun as Prince Andrei Bolkonsky. Russian soprano Elena Semenova makes her COC debut as Andrei’s fiancée, Countess Natasha Rostova, in the company of Moscow-born tenor Oleg Balashov (Prince Anatole Kuragin), mezzo-soprano Larisa Kostyuk (Countess Hélène Bezukhova), renowned Canadian mezzo-soprano Judith Forst (Marya Dmitrievna Akhrosimova), tenor Mikhail Agafonov (Count Pierre Bezukhov) and Russian bass Mikhail Kit (Field Marshal Kutuzov). Tim Albery serves as director, Johannes Debus as conductor.—Rick MacMillan
