Toronto Symphony Orchestra: Symphonie Fantastique

The centrepiece here is a vivid tone poem by Berlioz that portrays a young musician’s obsession with an aloof beloved. It had its origins in the composer’s experiences with the actress Harriet Smithson—whom he eventually married, although the union ended 11 years later. Veteran conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos also leads the orchestra in Joaquín Turina’s La Oración del torero, op. 34, and Joaquín Rodrigo’s popular Concierto de Aranjuez (with guitar soloist Pepe Romero).—Rick MacMillan
