Toronto Summer Music Festival: Leipzig String Quartet

Three of this quartet’s members were first chairs in the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig, which was led by Mendelssohn in the mid–18th century. Here they perform the German composer’s last major composition, his String Quartet in F Minor, op. 80, complemented by a reading of Haydn’s String Quartet in B-flat Major, op. 76, no. 4. Karl Leister, former principal clarinetist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, joins the group for Brahms’ melancholic Clarinet Quintet in B Minor, op. 115.—Rick MacMillan
