The city’s most versatile early music group presents From Praetorius to Bach: Visions of Darkness and Light, a look back at the early German baroque period through the themes of anguish and redemption. The performance features a large ensemble of rarely heard instruments, including sackbuts and cornetti, in addition to strings, lutes and keyboards. On the bill are works by Michael Praetorius (Glori sei Gott, Parts I and II, Ballet CCLXIV), Johann Hermann Schein (Padouana 6, Siehe also wird gesegnet), Heinrich Schütz (Nun danket alle Gott, Saul, Saul, was verfolgst du mich?) and J. S. Bach (his great cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden).—Rick MacMillan
