FESTIVAL FINALE Tenor Roger Honeywell and baritone James Westman headline a program of operatic arias and duets from Georges Bizet’s Carmen, Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème and Giuseppe Verdi’s La forza del destino, for a concert conceived and produced by CBC Radio’s Neil Crory and hosted by Radio Two personality Bill Richardson. Veteran Canadian bass-baritone Gary Relyea joins the duo to perform an extract from Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. Conductor Timothy Vernon leads Orchestra London. Aug. 17. $25–$35. MEASHA BRUEGGERGOSMAN This beloved Canadian soprano performs not one but four recitals with German pianist Justus Zeyen. Her programs include music by Benjamin Britten, Arnold Schoenberg, William Bolcom and Erik Satie, names that will be familiar to those who purchased Brueggergosman’s recent debut recording on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label. FREE MUSIC FOR WILDERNESS LAKE Ontario composer R. Murray Schafer, who turned 75 this year, is known worldwide for designing works meant to be performed in remote outdoor settings. Music for Wilderness Lake brings 12 trombonists into harmony with the shores of the Avon River, complemented here by soprano Brooke Dufton singing the haunting “Princess’s Aria” from another of Schafer’s large-scale environmental works, The Princess of the Stars. In the event of inclement weather, the event will take place in Knox Presbyterian Church. Aug. 9 and 10. Avon River, near Tom Patterson Island.
MUSIC FROM SCOTLAND The Choir of St. Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland’s premier cathedral chorus, pays a visit for a morning mix of traditional Scottish music—including the inevitable Robert Burns—and works by contemporary composers James MacMillan and Kenneth Leighton. Bagpipers take the stage for a performance of Highland Cathedral; a second show follows on the morning of Aug. 2, a lighter program of madrigals, folk songs and popular items, including Zoltán Kodály’s Evening Song.
