Sound Travels

  • Centre Island
Centre Island’s celebration of cutting-edge sound art marks its 10th anniversary with a series of gallery installations and sound sculptures, as well as outdoor and indoor concerts, site-specific performances, artist talks and workshops. Catch demonstrations of Barry Prophet’s Synthecycletron, a pedal-powered contraption that sets off synthesizers and generates sounds; check out Robert Mulder and Kristi Allik’s Sonic Boardwalk, a micro-sound landscape activated by the kinetic imprints of passersby; or take part in a free Soundwalk. Special events include an interview and a concert of multi-channel electroacoustic music by Montreal composer Robert Normandeau, Aug. 8; Toronto composer David Ogborn and Danish sound artist Jórgen Teller in a program of sound portraits from around the world, Aug. 9; and Ariadne Calling, in which participants walk a labyrinthine trail while immersed in an extended vocal universe created by Toronto composer Wende Bartley, Aug. 10. — Rick MacMillan
