This new all-ages opera-cum-theatre production is presented by Tapestry and Theatre Direct. Originally conceived by librettist Marjorie Chan and composer Abigail Richardson in Tapestry’s 2003 Composer-Librettist Laboratory, Sanctuary Song explores themes of friendship and freedom, inspired by the real-life story of an Asian elephant whose remarkable journey from a jungle to a circus to a zoo culminated in her release into a Tennessee sanctuary. Soprano Xin Wang and bass-baritone Alvin Crawford appear alongside actors Sharmila Dey and Frank Cox-O’Connell. — Rick MacMillan
