New Creations

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra launches its sixth annual new music festival with two concerts in February. Azul takes its title from the featured work by Argentine composer Osvaldo Golijov, for cello and orchestra. Also included is Golijov’s Three Songs (sung by soprano Dawn Upshaw) and Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy’s Through the Unknown, Unremembered Gate. The second concert, La Pasión, offers a suite from Golijov’s La Pasión según San Marcos, another from American composer Peter Lieberson’s opera Ashoka’s Dream, and the world premiere of Canadian Andrew Paul MacDonald’s Ode to the West Wind (with Colm Feore acting as narrator). TSO music director Peter Oundjian shares conducting duties, in both concerts, with Miguel Harth-Bedoya. Azul Feb. 25, La Pasión Feb. 27.—Rick MacMillan
