Soprano Hallie Fishel and lutenist John Edwards mark the Victoria Day weekend with a program of music from Shakespearean England. A Defence of Ryme: Songs to the Poetry of Thomas Campion and Samuel Daniel looks back at two figures who were known to engage in “pamphlet wars,” espousing their opinions on the art of lyric verse. Campion (1568–1620) set virtually all of his English poems to music himself, whereas Daniel’s work (1562–1619) survives in his brother John’s songbook.—Rick MacMillan
