Toronto Opera Repertoire, the city’s oldest amateur opera group, celebrates its 45th season with Franz Lehár’s The Merry Widow, a comic and suddenly relevant take on the impending bankruptcy of a small Balkan country. Donizetti’s masterpiece, Lucia di Lammermoor, based on a novel by Sir Walter Scott, features one of opera’s most glorious—and bloodiest—mad scenes in its third act.
