One of the world’s great virtuoso pianists, the Montreal-born phenom, currently based in Philadelphia and recording exclusively for Britain’s Hyperion label, returns to Music Toronto for his fifth recital. His ambitious program includes Haydn’s Sonata in F Major, Hob. XVI/23, and Sonata in B-flat Major, Hob. XVI/41, Alexis Weissenberg’s Sonata in a State of Jazz, Frédéric Chopin’s Barcarolle, op. 60 and Ballade no. 3 in A Major, op. 47, Hamelin’s own Étude no. 8 (“Erlkönig,” After Goethe) and Étude no. 7 (After Tchaikovsky), and Leopold Godowsky’s Symphonic Metamorphoses on Johann Strauss’ “Wine, Women and Song.”Rick MacMillan
