Maiinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra

Valery Gergiev, one of the world’s most dynamic conductors, leads his virtuoso band (formerly known as the Kirov Orchestra) in two programs. The first comprises Hector Berlioz’s “Royal Hunt and Storm” from his opera Les Troyens, a group of excerpts from the same composer’s Roméo et Juliette and Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky’s stirring Symphony no. 5 in E Minor. The second, an all-Russian evening, combines Anatol Liadov’s tone poem Enchanted Lake, Sergei Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no. 3 in D Minor and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 15 in A Major.—Rick MacMillan
