Oundjian and the orchestra launch the season in grand style with three performances of Gustav Mahler’s mammoth Symphony no. 3 in D Minor, starring mezzo-soprano Susan Platts, the women of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Toronto Children’s Chorus. A glorious hymn to nature, the work covers the gamut of emotions in six movements and 100-plus minutes, from a jubilant march to a delicate minuet and a rustic scherzo to a peaceful closing movement. “To me,” Mahler wrote famously to his friend musician Natalie Bauer-Lechner, a symphony means “building a world with all the resources of the available techniques.” And he did just that with this all-embracing aural evocation of creation.—Rick MacMillan
