Constantinople. This 80-minute event, conceived by the Greek-born composer Christos Hatzis, features the Juno Award–winning Gryphon Trio alongside Middle Eastern singer Maryem Tollar and mezzo-soprano Patricia O’Callaghan. Constantinople explores the complex nature of modern existence, addressing such issues as cultural diversity, conflict and coexistence, all through music inspired by early Christian spirituality and the composer’s own Byzantine music heritage. June 7 to 9. $20–$50. Bluma Appel Theatre.

Luna. This will be a night to remember for opera fans, who will relish the opportunity to hear some of Canada’s most renowned voices, including sopranos Isabel Bayrakdarian and Adrianne Pieczonka; tenors Richard Margison and Joseph Kaiser; baritones Russell Braun and Peter Barrett; as well as bass-baritone Robert Pomakov. Danish-Italian conductor Giordano Bellincampi leads the singers, along with members of the Canadian Opera Company Chorus and Toronto Symphony Orchestra, in a selection of classic arias and ensembles. June 8. $25–$300. Roy Thomson Hall.

The Passion of Winnie (Part One). This new “digital opera” blends film and live music to tell the story of South Africa’s journey to freedom through the life and times of Winnie Mandela. The film, directed by Warren Wilensky, features a montage of moving images on multiple screens, which are then coupled with live performers and orchestra. Bongani Ndodana-Breen’s music fuses elements of Xhosa culture, infectious township jive (think Paul Simon’s insanely popular Graceland), Cape jazz and anti-apartheid street chants, all within an operatic context. June 8 and 9. $30–$50. Isabel Bader Theatre.
