I Puritani

Opera in Concert presents a single, unstaged performance of Vincenzo Bellini’s 1835 opera seria, his last opera and a work that was a smash success at its Paris premiere. Set near Plymouth, England, during the wars between Cromwell and the Stuarts, it tracks divided loyalties, death sentences, the betrothal of Lord Walton’s daughter, Elvira, her temporary madness and the eventual reunion of parted lovers. One of the most brilliant works of the bel canto era, I Puritani comprises an array of beautiful melodies, to be sung here by tenor Colin Ainsworth and baritones Justin Welsh and Bruce Kelly, among others. Michael Rose serves as music director and pianist.—Rick MacMillan
